Through advocacy, Alliance NGOs in Africa push for policies, plans, and actions in line with international road safety targets to save lives and reduce the effects of road traffic accidents.
The Africa Chapter is working with the African Regional Network for Road Safety Legislators to find ways for NGOs and MPs to work together to push the road safety agenda in Africa. The first meeting was held in November 2020. More details about the legislator collaboration can be found HERE.
#CommitToAct is a campaign led by the Alliance and its NGOs that calls on government leaders to uphold the rights of the people to safe roads and journeys. NGOs identify demands that are relevant in their own country and raise awareness, mobilize support, and demand change for specific, meaningful action. This campaign builds on the momentum of the new UN resolution on Improving Global Road Safety adopted in August 2020 and the hopes of governments and communities to build back better following the COVID-19 pandemic. Alliance NGOs in Africa participate in global road safety campaigns such as the UN Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) and the World Day of Remembrance (WDoR).
UNGRSW is a biennial global road safety campaign hosted by WHO. This campaign brings individuals, governments, NGOs, corporations, and other organizations from around the world together to raise awareness on road safety and changes needed. It is a valuable opportunity for NGOs, civil society organizations and individuals to mobilize under the banner of a global campaign with a global identity and mandate to have a stronger voice for their campaigns. The WDoR was created by the European Federation of Road Traffic Victims. It is an official United Nations day commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year to remember the millions of lives lost or hurt by traffic crashes. It is a day of solidarity for families, friends, and loved ones who have been affected by a traffic crash, and also provides an opportunity for NGOs to advocate for safer roads and road victims’ rights around the world.
